The Return to Office: Meta’s Transition from Remote Work during the Pandemic

Starting from September 5, Meta employees will return to their normal work life as they will have to go to the office. True, for now they will be mandatory three days a week, and it can be said that working from home, which started during the coronavirus pandemic, is starting to disappear. At least in the big tech companies.

Even though at the beginning of the pandemic, Meta loudly praised the fact that the future of our work is completely remote work, but already during these three years, practice has proven the opposite. Even if at the beginning Meta had high work efficiency, it did not suffer from remote communication, but the company realized that for the sake of overall development, it will be necessary to go to the office.

Mutual trust of employees is mentioned as the main points for returning to the offices, which, however, is better formed in person, as well as the involvement of new colleagues in work is more successful if they are on site. As Met representatives point out, there are things that can simply be resolved and clarified more quickly face to face than through a webcam and correspondence.

The return of face-to-face work is likely part of Meta’s plans to improve the speed and efficiency of the company’s development, which has been associated with massive layoffs and restructuring. Apple also requires its employees to come to the office already three days a week, and Amazon is preparing to return to the office completely all five days a week.

It is interesting that Meta wants to create the virtual environment in which we will all live in the future, however, this will be achieved by being in person.
