The Return of the Wankel Engine: Mazda’s Classic Cars at Sachsen Classic 2023

There are currently no new cars in Europe with a Wankel engine, but the design principle will soon return as a range extender in the electric Mazda MX-30 E-EV. The Japanese brand has been loyal to the rotary piston engine developed in Germany for decades. Two models from this history can be seen in action at the “Sachsen Classic 2023” (August 17th – 19th) at the end of the week. The classic car rally takes place over three stages and 544 kilometers from Zwickau to Dresden. Mazda is launching a 110 S Cosmo Sport and an RX-7.

The Cosmo Sport was built from 1967 to 1972 and was the world’s first production car with a twin-disc rotary engine. It has a chamber volume of twice 491 cubic centimeters, delivers 110 hp (81 kW) at 7000 rpm and a maximum torque of 142 Newton meters. A total of 1,176 copies were made for the Japanese market. The third generation (FD) RX-7 was produced from 1991 to 2002. Its Wankel (2 x 654 cc) is positioned as a front mid-engine in the vehicle and drives the rear axle.

The two vehicles for Motorpresse Stuttgart’s Sachsen Classic come from the Frey family’s Mazda collection in Augsburg. (aum)
