Luna, which was a leading brand in the country in the 1970s, is about to come back in electric form. It keeps part of its retro design and returns in a modern electric version. Kinetic Engineering Limited (KEL) has announced that it has begun manufacturing the frame and other components for the upcoming Kinetic E-Luna. The electric iteration of the brand’s iconic Luna moped will be launched under the Kinetic Green branding.
When the Luna was launched nearly 50 years ago, it was priced at Rs 2,000. It became one of the most efficient, economical and comfortable vehicles for India at that time. According to Kinetic Engineering, all major subassemblies were developed in-house for the e-Luna, including the main frame, main stand, sidestand and swingarm. The company has also established a dedicated production line with plans to launch 5,000 sets per month. KEL says it has invested over Rs 3 crore to upgrade the paint, print and fabrication shops at its Ahmednagar plant to support the production and assembly of the model.
“It is great to see the legendary Luna back in her e-avatar. We are very proud to be a part of this legacy, manufacturing all major sub-assemblies identically. During her heyday she sold over 2000 units a day. I am sure she will Luna will be doing very well in the new avatar. We expect this business to grow to an additional Rs 30 crore per annum over the next 2-3 years as e-Luna’s volume increases’ – said Ajinkya Firodia, MD, Kinetic Engineering Ltd.
