The Return of Skirt Over Trousers: A Surprising Fashion Comeback

The specter of fashion dates back to the early noughties, was spread by women like Sienna Miller, Misha Barton and Britney Spears, divided opinion and was then sent into eternal banishment: skirt over trousers or dress over trousers, in English “drousers”. or rather called “Skousers” (a combination of dress/skirt and trousers) – doubly stupid idea, absolute no-go, never to be seen again.

But as we all know, there is no real purgatory in fashion. No matter how many times a trend has been cursed, at some point someone will boldly bring it up from the undead, whereupon some people will come to terms with it while others continue to be horrified by it. In the case of the return of skirt over pants, some of the blame can be placed on Katie Holmes. The actress attended a New York radio station’s Christmas gala at the end of last year, and instead of wondering what this high-profile celebrity was doing there, everyone pounced on her choice of clothing: the 44-year-old was actually wearing a mini dress over jeans. All the so-called Y2K trends had already been recycled at this point – slim sunglasses, crop tops, hipsters and so on – but no one had publicly dared to try this combination from hell until now.

Die New York Times immediately contacted Holmes’ stylist Karla Welch and demanded an explanation. What were you thinking? Firstly, it was actually a long bustier top, said the well-known stylist, but above all they found the look “youthful”.

Most read this week:

A few Skousers had already been seen on the catwalk, and the fall collections were presented in February, i.e. the things that are in the stores right now. Skirt over trousers at Chanel, at Burberry, Armani, a whole dozen at Fendi. Anyone who has taken a look at a Mango shop window these days will see a shimmering silver shirt dress hanging over black flared trousers. So the trend has long been back among us.

This doesn’t look like layered salad, but rather well-thought-out layering

That’s why several contemporary witnesses have already spoken out in women’s magazines to describe their very personal experiences from the noughties. In the long run, it was simply one shift too many, they say. A hopeless, shapeless mess on the body. It’s like you went to a garden party in a skirt and then quickly put on a pair of pants underneath at a late hour when it’s cold and doesn’t matter anyway. One Vogue-The author dared to test herself last week and wore three different versions in one week. Spoiler alert: She survived. Even quite good.

Admittedly, Katie Holmes actually didn’t look particularly flattering at the time because the top looked too compressed over the jeans. But the new variants of the “Drousers”, “Skousers”, whatever, are much more successful because they are more elegant. Nothing is thrown together like a hippie here, no different patterns and fabrics are layered on top of each other. Most of the time, the skirt and pants are the same color or at least made of the same flowing fabric. This doesn’t look like layered salad, but rather well-thought-out layering. The advantages are easy to guess even without a self-test: You can sit down comfortably, even cross-legged, and wear clothes that are actually a bit too cold for.

If you look closely, the combination isn’t that far-fetched, but rather home-made in the truest sense of the word. Because the origin of it all is: the apron over the pants. At the exhibition about Akris in the Zurich Museum of Design that has just ended, you could once again trace the beginnings of the now hundred-year-old Swiss brand. Alice Kriemler-Schoch had sewn aprons, and in the morning she dynamically tied one on herself and went to work. At that time, a beautiful, high-quality model was something like the ultimate fashion item for the housewife, which later was no longer just tied over skirts, but also trousers. This may be one of the reasons for the strong aversion to this trend. Because many women unconsciously always think of aprons, stoves and baking trays.

As a nod to its roots, Akris recently designed fitted apron corsets and short wrap aprons over pants that look like modern suits for women. And just a few hours ago, the hyped label Courrèges in Paris presented flowing tunics over cut-out trousers, A-line dresses and skirts in typical patent leather over straight trousers. Those who are said to be dead live longer.
