The Return of Extreme Thinness: Is the Fashion Industry Headed for Another Eating Disorder Boom?

The “heroin chic” of the 1990s and the models suffering from anorexia were long forgotten, however, it turns out that everything changes and returns again in fashion in this matter as well. Journalists and experts all over the world are worried about the new trend – medium and large size models can be seen less and less in fashion shows, while super thinness (if you want, fatness) is taking over the dominance. Does this mean another boom in eating disorders is in store, or was it not over after all?

In recent years, fashion shows were dominated by an absolute variety of body shapes and skin colors – it seemed that a miracle had happened. Many even started to say that the fashion industry is ready for a change and will no longer play the role of a dictator who stares down anyone who doesn’t even slightly meet the established standards. And the standards were brutal. During the period from the 1990s to the early 2000s, supermodels were so thin that they literally shone through. The English-language media called them “thin as wafers”. And not Belgian waffles, but those that are thinner than thin.

But change also had to happen in the highly regulated world of haute couture, where for a long time women’s clothing size 30 dominated. In the American size chart, this means size 0 (!). And a whole generation of women grew up looking at such thin models, who, moreover, under the influence of various substances, regularly became the center of attention of the tabloid press. Thinking that the ideal of beauty is the exaggerated 90-60-90. In pursuit of the almost unattainable parameters, eating disorders also spread, for which the fashion industry was repeatedly criticized.

Along with the growing problems of eating disorders, the body positivity movement began to develop, which aimed to break down stigmatizing ideals of beauty and emphasize that the main thing is personality and health, not the number shown on the scale. And it didn’t take long for medium and large size models to start getting on the “tongue” of the most famous fashion houses.
