The Return of Deported Albanian Family with Seriously Ill Teenager to Central Saxony Faces Obstacles

The return of the deported Albanian family with the seriously ill teenager to Central Saxony, planned for Tuesday, initially failed. The family’s lawyer, Leo Matthias Waltermann, confirmed this at the request of MDR SACHSEN. As far as he knows, Albanian authorities did not let the family board the plane to Germany. First they had “Free press” reported. The 16-year-old had called Waltermann early in the morning and reported about the failed departure.

Lawyer reached on holiday no responsible authority representatives

The lawyer was unable to offer quick help because the German authorities could not be reached early in the morning and because of the public holiday. The 16-year-old suffers from cystic fibrosis and cannot be adequately treated in Albania. The serious illness was the main reason why the family came to Germany in 2019. Since then, the young person’s condition has stabilized, she attended school and was even able to play sports.

Your medication were confiscated upon entry after deportation in Albania, so the girl is currently not cared for. The plan was for the young person to be treated again at the Dresden University Hospital starting this Wednesday, said the family’s lawyer. The young person urgently needs this treatment. Otherwise she would risk a collapse and emergency treatment in Albania.

Family was provided with necessary documents

Attorney Waltermann had obtained a so-called start-up certificate from the responsible Saxony state directorate to confirm the asylum procedure for the family’s return, which was sent to the family by email on Monday. However, a translation into Albanian was initially missing. The lawyer also requested that the family’s data be deleted from the Schengen information system, in which rejected asylum seekers are stored.

Cystic fibrosis
Cystic fibrosis is a congenital, genetically determined metabolic disease. The lungs, pancreas, upper respiratory tract, liver, intestines and gallbladder are affected to varying degrees. In Germany, around 8,000 people suffer from cystic fibrosis.
The life expectancy of those affected is around 40 years.

Family finances ticket themselves

The family initially financed the return flight ticket from Tirana via Munich to Dresden themselves, as the lawyer said. It is now derelict.

Waltermann wants to clarify with the state administration on Wednesday how the seriously ill young person and her parents and a younger sister can be brought to Germany immediately. If necessary, a German embassy official in Tirana would have to accompany the family through the exit to Albania and make it clear to the authorities that the family is welcome in Germany. The lawyer did not expect that Albanian authorities would prevent the family’s return. Albanians are allowed to stay in the EU visa-free for 90 days twice a year.

The Saxon Ministry of the Interior had confirmed that the family’s deportation was illegal.
