“Lebanese Debate”
About two months ago, the Ministry of Health in Lebanon dealt with announcing the end of the cholera outbreak in the country, as details of measures aimed at successfully combating the epidemic were provided. However, fears have returned today about the return of this dangerous disease to Lebanon, as a result of infections recorded in the regions of northeastern Syria, specifically in the cities of Aleppo and Idlib.
This threat is due to the constant movement of displaced people between the two countries, which could lead to another outbreak of the disease. What is the validity of the cholera enemy to Lebanon?
In this context, a member of the Parliamentary Health Committee, Representative Abd al-Rahman al-Bizri, denied everything that is being circulated about the return of cholera to Lebanon, stressing that “there is no epidemic spread of the disease at the present time, thanks to preventive measures and continuous epidemiological surveillance.”
In an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, he confirmed that “there is no danger of a cholera epidemic spreading at the present time, and that precautionary measures are being taken in densely populated areas, as well as in areas where the displaced have concentrated, in order to limit the transmission of the disease. Nevertheless, He stressed that the danger may remain serious, especially with the presence of cholera in the region.
Al-Bizri pointed out that “the epidemiological surveillance system exists and is being followed up seriously,” noting that “there must be a difference between the daily reports of registered cases and the continuous epidemiological surveillance process.”
Regarding the “cholera” vaccine, he stressed that it is not currently available, because cholera is not present permanently in Lebanon, and it is supposed to be given to people who intend to travel to countries where the disease is spread.
He pointed out that “the infrastructure, water and sanitation services in Lebanon have not witnessed a significant improvement, which makes there is always a fear of the transmission of diseases transmitted through water.”
Al-Bizri reassured the citizens about cholera, noting that “there are no current risks of cholera returning to Lebanon, and therefore there is no need to worry about this issue.”
Despite this, MP Al-Bizri stressed the importance of improving the country’s water and sanitation infrastructure and services, as this is an essential preventive measure to reduce the transmission of water-borne diseases. He stressed that improving this infrastructure is necessary for the health and safety of citizens and for the prevention of infectious diseases.
