The restorer Stefan Tapanov is dead

The Assoc. Stefan Hristov Tapanov, head of the “Restoration” department of the National Academy of Arts, which for more than fifteen years had been organizing and leading the restoration activities of the frescoes of the Rila Monastery, announced “doors“.

Stefan Tapanov was born on June 4, 1963 in Shipka. In 1982 he graduated from the USSR State University, Kazanlak, and in 1982 – the National Academy of Arts. He is one of the most famous restorers in our country.

More than fifteen years ago he was entrusted with the direction of the great restoration of the frescoes of the Rila Monastery. In 2007 the frescoes of Dupnishka and the Samokov gate were restored, in 2009 – the narthex of the main church of the monastery “Nativity of the Virgin”, after which the restoration of the interior of the church began, with works starting from ” Assumption of St. John “Rilski chapel” and ends with the altar frescoes, on which work is being done from this summer.

The frescoes of the Dormition church of St. John of Rila (the old post station near the tomb) and the Orlitsa sacristy have also been restored.
