Restaurant owners in Vaucluse are very reluctant to check the identity of their customers. The text of the law on the vaccination pass allows it, however, but it is not not mandatory. The senators had abolished this identity check. MPs reinstated it on Sunday in a toned down version. Restaurant owners and café owners will be able to check an identity document, but only “when there are serious reasons to believe that the document presented is not related to the person who presents it”.
Control Georges when he presents Jacqueline’s pass
Every morning, Fabien, bartender at the Pipe-Line in Avignon, checks his customers’ vaccination passes, but this waiter does not want to check the identity cards: “Me, it bothers me. It’s not our job. We are not sworn to verify the identity. The text provides for this control when there is serious doubt about the identity of the person presenting the pass, but that does not convince Eric, restaurateur at Pili in Avignon: “Indeed, if we notice that George is presenting a pass called Jacqueline, we will check but we will not ask for it often…” In this other restaurant, Amandine, the head of the Molière room, wonders how she will be able to repel fraudsters: “will have to rehearse scenarios to practice before encountering the problem”.
Not the role of a bartender to control identities
In Avignon, Fabio Zamora runs the restaurant “17 Place aux Vins”. He is reluctant to verify the identity of customers: “it’s not not our role to control the identity or to check if it is a fake or not. If it’s a fake pass, there’s nothing I can do about it. We have already been checked twice and we had a sanction. It can be a fine or a closure. Right now we don’t need it. If there are fake passes circulating, it’s not our job. We have a big drop in clientele and a drop in attendance. We are already refusing people who do not have their pass. If from now on, we have to check their identity, it becomes complicated“.
