WerterAccording to experts, the chance of finding a bright orange lobster is about one in ten million. They were then surprised at the De Rode Kreeft restaurant in Werchter when their batch of one hundred lobsters contained such an albino specimen. The Canadian female has been baptized Babette and she will not disappear into the pot for the time being. “Preferably we are looking for a new home for her.”
Four days ago Babette swam in her natural habitat in marine waters, more precisely in the Bay of Fundy between the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, also bordering a part of the US state of Maine, on the Atlantic coast of North America . He is currently in the famous Werchter in a basin with his dark blue to dark purple companions. The executives of the De Rode Kreeft want to make an exception for once and that’s why – for the moment – they won’t end up lukewarm on a teljoor with a spoonful of mayonnaise.

“We have had our restaurant for four years now and have never experienced it,” enthuses manager Philippe Walschaerts. “I immediately called the importer and in thirty years of business it is the second time that he knows that someone has such a unique specimen in his aquarium of him. I’ve done a bit of research, but haven’t actually been able to get a lot of information about it. What we do know is that we will not serve them immediately to the first gourmet. First we want to see if there is any interest from Sealife in this world and then see what the possibilities are. Of course, that beast won’t live another fifty years. But it is a very lively animal, which constantly makes ambras with its congeners ”, laughs Philippe.
Herd animals
Babette does not receive preferential treatment at Red Cancer and is just like the rest like a herring in a barrel. “It may sound barbaric, but get yourself a large aquarium and put a lobster in every corner and in no time they will be huddled together. They are, so to speak, herd animals that cannot survive on their own. It now weighs around 720 grams, but it’s only a matter of time before the weight drops. They are not fed and actually digest themselves over time. Now we will show them to our customers and then hopefully a solution will come up. “

An albino lobster has an orange color because there is a difference in pigmentation. “According to our importer, he had a genetic mutation, which means the proteins are linked differently. Another less likely reason for its orange color is that it has ingested food coloring. If you look at the entire population, it doesn’t seem like that at all, ”Philippe reflects. “If we taste them now, you won’t taste the difference with a traditional dark lobster.
