Resounding failure of Nintendo, Wii still sells… one copy. While manufacturing of the console was discontinued in 2017, one person purchased a Wii U in 2023 UNITED STATES. And she’s the only one, reports phoneandroid.
The information comes to us from Mat Piscatella, director of the analysis firm Circana. The purchase at 299 dollars (283 euros) comes when no other console had not been sold since May 2022 in the United States. The product purchased was neither second-hand nor reconditioned but indeed new. However, it is not known in which store the purchase was made.
A collector’s purchase?
For Mat Piscatella, this type of purchase is not isolated: three copies of PSVita were sold in November 2021, while production of the console had ended two years earlier, specifies Numerama. The lucky owner of the Wii U will be able to enjoy several video games not existing on other consoles.
However, it has no longer been possible to purchase games or digital content on the Nintendo eShop for several months. All Wii online features will also be disabled in April 2024. phoneandroid assumes, however, that the buyer is probably a collector who will leave the console in its packaging.
The career of the Wii U has not been flamboyant. In five years, only 13.56 million consoles have been sold. Arrival in 2017, la Switch will soon have 130 million sales, almost 10 times more. The Wii will, however, remain a piece of Nintendo history and will certainly find its place in the company’s future museum.
