The research: only one in four Italians does sport. Sedentary lifestyle in the world costs 520 billion a year – Sport

MILANO – In Italy 33.7 percent of people do not do any type of physical activity. 31.7 is not enough. 10.9 trains, but sporadically. And only 23.5 – less than one in four people – do physical activity on a regular basis. These are the data presented in Milan by Giorgio Leo and Vito Stolfi, animators of Show Carea voluntary organization active in the fitness field that promotes, among other things, rehabilitation campaigns and free training for cancer patients. “Our goal is to make health a priority, spreading active lifestyles to free as many people from the trap of a sedentary lifestyle. It also means taking care of those close to us, of society, and even of the State, reducing the impact on healthcare costs”, said Stolfi from the stage of the Giorgio Gaber Lyric Theatre, for the third edition of the Health Show, organized in collaboration , among others, with the companies GetFit and TechnoGym.

Sedentary lifestyle costs 500 billion

The age group in which most sports are practiced in Italy coincides with lower secondary schools: between 11 and 14 years old, 45.7 percent of Italians practice at least one sport. The figure collapses among the over 60s, with just 11.1 percent of the population physically active. Just over half of their peers train in Northern Europe. But the problem of sedentary lifestyle is global, as underlined by the report presented by Giorgio Leo: “Two-thirds of the adult population globally does not do the amount of physical exercise recommended by the World Health Organization guidelines. Inactivity worldwide will cost over $520 billion in medical care alone between 2020 and 2030. The main chronic diseases related to insufficient physical activity are: dementia, cancer, hypertension and diabetes.” Among Show Care’s financiers is former football goalkeeper Francesco Toldo.
