The Rescue and Justice for Starved Dog Janco: Overcoming Neglect and Seeking Compensation

The 7-year-old beige and white American Staff, named Janco, weighed 15 kg, half as much as a dog of this breed in good health. He was taken from the home where he lived, in Rurange-lès-Thionville, on March 22, 2021. His skin was scaly, his ribs visible, his ears marked by wounds similar to burns. The animal was starved, anemic.

His master, aged around 30, has just been sentenced this Tuesday, July 25 by the police court of Thionville for deprivation of food or watering of a domestic animal. This is a fourth class violation. The defendant is fined 300 euros, required at the hearing in June. The ban on keeping an animal for three years has not been pronounced.

Only one compensated association

A neighbor had sounded the alarm. He had seen the dog wasting away on the other side of the fence. Animal defense associations had intervened at the home with the local authorities. The dog had been taken care of, placed in a foster family, before being adopted.

His master did not respond to his summons to the Thionville police court. When he was heard by the gendarmes, he admitted that he did not feed the dog because he did not have the means to do so.

Several animal defense associations have stepped up to the plate. But the Brigitte-Bardot foundation and the Stéphane-Lamart association were dismissed from their constitutions of civil parties, deemed inadmissible due to the nature of the offense. Only the damage and compensation for Elyri’s Place, which had collected the dog, will be discussed and quantified at a later hearing in October.
