Denis Pusulin, the leader of the “Donetsk Republic”, said that “starting this day, February 18, a mass, centralized deportation of people to the Russian Federation is being organized. Women, children and the elderly must be evacuated first.”
“After an agreement with the Russian Federation, the Rostov region has ready places to accommodate citizens. The evacuees will be provided with everything they need,” Pusilins promised.
Leonid Pasechnik, the leader of the “People’s Republic of Lugansk”, then issued a similar statement.
According to the representatives of the “republics”, several hundred thousand people are planned to be evacuated.
Washington estimates that Russia has pulled in about 130,000 troops from Ukraine’s borders. Despite this concentration of forces, Russia says it does not intend to attack Ukraine and accuses the West of causing panic.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government and Russian-backed militant gangs in Eastern Ukraine are exchanging charges of gunfire and other ceasefire violations.
The United States has expressed concern that Moscow intends to create an excuse to invade Ukraine.
