True stories sometimes spring from reality with surprises beyond imagination. The story of George Hamdani, a Jew who lived in the land of Chad and continued to play the role of the muezzin and preacher in the largest mosque in the capital, N’Djamena, is considered one of these amazing stories. An old document was found in the Israeli state archives bearing dates and facts indicating this strange story. This document, which dates back more than six decades and tells the story of George, the only Jew in Chad, was published as written by Israeli diplomat Aryeh Lavey in a telegram addressed to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Georges arrived in the vibrant capital, N’Djamena, 25 years ago. It should be noted that the city was living under the complete domination of Islam at that time. With the absence of the personality of the muezzin and preacher in the Grand Mosque, Hamdani decided to take the step and present himself to fill this role. He chanted the call to prayer on the city’s rooftops and delivered sermons on Fridays. Despite this direct religious role, Hamdani built a business empire, building homes, hotels and even a movie theater. As if this were not enough, his sudden resignation from the mosque aroused the curiosity of the community, and the big surprise was when everyone learned that he was a Jew and not a Muslim.
Lavey concluded his report with details of George’s personal life, where he married a Chadian Muslim woman and had seven children with her. Despite the uproar caused by this marriage, he was protected by his wealth and power, which gradually calmed things down and life returned to normal.
