After a short stay in hospice care, which was announced Nov. 17, Carter died at home surrounded by friends, family and her husband, former President Jimmy Carter.
Earlier this year, the Carter Center announced that Carter had been diagnosed with dementia.
The publication notes that Carter lived a long and successful life with her husband, whom she knew almost all her life.

Longest marriage among presidential couples
She first met Jimmy Carter when she was a child, and they married in 1946 in their hometown of Plains, Georgia.
They were married for 77 years – the longest marriage among presidential couples.
“The best thing I ever did was marry Rosalynn. It’s the pinnacle of my life,” 39th President Jimmy Carter said in an interview with the Carter Center in 2015.
Carter helped her husband in business and politics
Rosalynn Carter played an important role in her husband’s success in both business and politics – he often turned to her for advice.
When Jimmy Carter was first elected governor of Georgia, Rosalynn Carter focused on helping state residents with mental health problems as part of the Governor’s Commission to Improve Services for People with Mental and Emotional Problems.

Later, when Jimmy Carter announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States, he said that his wife was “much more political” than he was, and the White House website states that she helped her husband because of her strong belief in his abilities.
As first lady, she has renewed her focus on mental health advocacy. As Chair Emeritus of the President’s Commission on Mental Health, she led a group that worked to implement policy changes regarding people with mental illness.
Life after the White House
After Jimmy Carter lost his re-election campaign, he and Rosalynn returned to Georgia and founded the Carter Center in Atlanta in 1982.
Since then, the Carter Center has monitored pro-democracy elections around the world and has nearly eradicated Guinea worm disease.
In the mid-1980s, the couple began working with Habitat for Humanity, where they and the group built and renovated more than 4,300 homes.
Despite her political responsibilities, she remained focused on her family. With Jimmy Carter she has four children and 22 grandchildren.

Jimmy Carter, now 99 and the longest-living US president, has been in hospice care since February. He enjoys peanut butter ice cream and says he’s “cool about death.”
The couple’s grandson, Jason Carter, said in a recent interview that his grandparents enjoyed spending their “final chapter” together at home, celebrating their longevity, their family and their love in the same tiny Georgia town where they were both born.
“The very word ‘love’ defines not only their personal relationships, but also how they relate to the world,” said Jason Carter, who now chairs the board of the Carter Center.
