Football and ice hockey are not necessarily complementary. Except for one position: that of goalkeeper. And today, in English D2 ice hockey, there is a goalkeeper who has shone at a very high level in football: Petr Cech! Many remember him for his career in England, he played at Arsenal and Chelsea. Cech notably won four English championships with the Blues (2005, 2006, 2010 and 2015) as well as a Champions League (2012) and played nearly 500 matches there. Petr Cech, 1m96 Czech goalkeeper, also wore the colors of Stade Rennes in France (between 2002 and 2004, 78 matches).

And he had a particularity, which was that, in his goals, he wore a helmet. So it wasn’t coquetry. It was to protect himself. Cech suffered a serious head injury which almost cost him his life during a match against Reading (October 14, 2006), he took the right knee of one of his opponents in the head. Results: skull fracture, hospital emergencies…
And Cech then always equipped himself with a protective helmet to guard his goals.

At 41, he hasn’t lost his touch. Cech shines in the goals of Oxford City, in English division 2 ice hockey. “I’m happy, I always loved hockey but my parents couldn’t afford the equipment and so I played football/ But what’s happening to me now is like a childhood dream and it’s ‘is nice “ he told the Guardian.
During his team’s last match, he was decisive: 62 saves out of 64 shots attempted by his opponents! A completely mind-blowing performance which allowed his new team, last in the standings, to win 3 goals to 2… against the reigning champion! We call that a successful reconversion!
