The Remarkable Comeback of Guy Lafleur: A Piece of Sporting History – Sportreport

On August 19, 1988, Guy Lafleur wrote a piece of sporting history. The Montreal Canadiens legend announced his retirement from retirement and returned to the National Hockey League (NHL). But not at the club where he became a sporting icon. Time to look back, time for sports report history.

On that same date, Lafleur agreed to a one-year contract with the New York Rangers. The Canadian returned to the NHL after around three and a half years.

The last game before that was in November 1984, when Guy Lafleur had 1,246 points and five Stanley Cup wins in 961 games with the Montreal Canadiens.

A side note: the Canadian ended up only playing one season for Rangers. After two more seasons with the Quebec Nordiques, he finally ended his career.
