The National Institute of Anthropology and History of Mexico (INAH), cited this Thursday by local media, reported the discovery of the remains of a house that was part of a pre-Hispanic settlement predecessor to the indigenous town of San Miguel Chapultepec, which was established during the time of the viceroyalty in the current mayor’s office of Miguel Hidalgo (Mexico City).
The discovery of the ruins took place during the works of an archaeological project that, since the end of last year, has been carried out on the property where the headquarters of the Ministry of Health of Mexico is located.
According to the INAH, a group of archaeologists found the structures of the ancient house after having found, at a depth of two meters, a pre-Hispanic grave belonging to an adult person.
Likewise, that institute mentioned that it was decided to carry out an extensive excavation at the site, after identifying an alignment of stones. Subsequently, the specialists determined that this set of rocks corresponded to a house, composed of an entrance, a hallway and three rooms.
Details of the old home
It is estimated that the house was between 1.8 and 2.5 meters in length, while its walls reached a maximum height of 1.3 meters. Experts indicated that the home had two stages of construction. In the first, rough stones were used, and later, faceted stones were used to gain height.
For her part, archaeologist María de Lourdes López Camacho explained that the remains of the house, which was inhabited in the 15th century, are the first material evidence related to a village that took advantage of the few non-flood areas of Lake Mexico.
Likewise, López Camacho explained that in the front part of the house the vestiges of two wooden piles that were used to tie canoes were discovered, which means that the property was located next to a canal in which trajineras circulated at the time. pre-Hispanic. This was determined by the presence of clay of volcanic origin, known as bentonite, as lake sediment.
Regarding the pre-Hispanic settlement, specialists suggested that it had its peak in the Late Postclassic period, during the dominance of the Mexica culture. This was determined after analyzing the ceramic sherds found at the site. However, they stressed that the possibility that its creation dates from the time of the lordship of the Tepanec people in that region is not ruled out.
