The Reluctance of PP-DB in Winning Elections and Imposing Candidates on DB: Insights from Former Chairman of ‘Yes, Bulgaria’

I see a reluctance to win these elections on the part of PP-DB, and the party of Kiril Petkov and Asen Vassilev imposes candidates on DB in every regional city. This was stated by Nikolay Yanev – the former chairman of the local organization of “Yes, Bulgaria” in Pazardzhik in the program “(O)position”. He left the party in disagreement with the right-wing United’s tactics for the upcoming local elections.

The problem, according to him, is the compromises made by DB in the name of the so-called assembly. He singled out the appointments made in his area by the “Denkov-Gabriel” office. For example, an acting municipal councilor is nominated by GERB as regional governor. “The appointments of various offices in the region are not made through a competition, but people who are personnel from the previous administration of the country are moved from one institution to another. I don’t see any change in this direction,” Yanev pointed out.

He said that “Yes, Bulgaria” found out from the media and Facebook about the intention of the PP to nominate MP Petar Kulenski as a candidate for mayor of Pazardzhik. Attempts have been made to negotiate with the PP with the idea of fielding an independent candidate for wider representation. However, the local structure of the PP stated that they had received an instruction to look for their own people for the regional cities.

According to Yanev, the origin of the problems is the coalition with PP, made for the last parliamentary elections. “This union is tailoring itself to the status quo,” he believes. The former local leader of Yes, Bulgaria claims that he has been trying to talk to his party leadership for months, but nothing has come of it. “There is a team in Sofia that conducts the negotiations at the central level, and we are given quotas – for places on lists, where there will be mayors, where there won’t be, which places are for DB, which are for PP”, Yanev explained . The same applied to the personnel appointments – first proposals were asked from the local structure, and then others came down.

Yanev believes that DB is giving way to PP – probably because he considers it the coalition partner with greater electoral weight. According to him, the idea of resolving the disputes between the two formations by running independent candidates is unrealistic, as it cannot work so close to the elections.
