Myth 36: What is the relationship between vision and dementia?
The eye is closely related to the brain. The eye collects light and focuses it on the retina (the light-sensing tissue at the back of the eye), which converts this light into electrical signals. The optic nerve connects the eyes to the brain, and it transmits electrical signals to the visual cortex of the brain, where they are processed and analyzed so that we can see the image.
During development, the retina and optic nerve are actually formed from brain tissue, and they are thought to be part of the central nervous system, closely connected, so some diseases that damage the brain can affect both the optic nerve and the retina. Dementia is one such condition that affects the brain responsible for vision and visual processing. It leads to degeneration of brain tissue, damage to the optic nerve and visual cortex, and loss of vision. However, poor vision also increases the risk of dementia. When the eyes are aging or have eye diseases, the elderly will reduce the habit of reading or looking far away, and then reduce the visual stimulation of the brain to receive information. This reduction in sensory and cognitive input may accelerate cognitive decline and increase the risk of dementia.
Studies have found that diabetes-related eye diseases can increase the risk of dementia by 61%, age-related macular degeneration by 26%, and cataract by 11%. People with more than one eye disease are at higher risk of developing dementia. If you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, stroke and other systemic diseases at the same time, the risk of dementia will increase exponentially. These health conditions are very common among the elderly and will worsen with time, so more attention should be paid to them.
Recently, a university team has successfully developed an artificial intelligence system that detects Alzheimer’s disease through the analysis of “fundus images”, with an accuracy of over 80%. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cognitive impairment. The patients’ brain nerve cells are significantly reduced, leading to memory loss, abnormal language expression ability, personality changes, poor cognitive function, and inability to take care of daily life on their own.
This scientific research not only increases the public’s understanding of the relationship between eye and brain diseases, but also becomes a test for screening diseases.
