The relationship between the Russian Federation and the EU does not want to aggravate a number of officials in the European Union

It is emphasized that the positions of some officials have led to the fact that in the EU there are disagreements with individual member states that oppose changes in policy, because Russia’s actions “are only getting worse.”

It is indicated that on March 8, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell met with EU Ambassador to Moscow Marcus Ederer.

The latter, according to the interlocutor of the agency, familiar with the details of the meeting, argued that the position of Brussels in relation to the Russian Federation was outdated and too focused on the military conflict in the Donbas.

The ambassador noted that the European Union needs to move on. He also advised Borrell to “develop a new way” in this matter.

At the same time, the spokesman for the EU High Representative declined to comment on Monday’s meeting in an interview with Bloomberg.

She noted that EU foreign ministers agree with “the continued relevance of the implementation of the five guiding principles, as well as a broader approach to counter, deter and engage with Russia where necessary.”

Bloomberg notes that the guiding principles mean full implementation of agreements that ended major hostilities in eastern Ukraine, forging close ties with Russia’s neighbors, strengthening defense against Russian threats, and selective cooperation on issues such as countering terrorism.
