The Relationship Between Long-term Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors and the Risk of Dementia

Data from 5,712 people aged 45 and over were reportedly analyzed. Of these, 26% were taking drugs to reduce stomach acid, in particular omeprazole and rabeprazole. Within five and a half years, 10% of the participants developed dementia. The remaining 4,222 people were not taking drugs, but 415 of them also developed dementia.

After adjusting for age, gender, origin, and the presence of diseases such as diabetes, the researchers concluded that taking proton pump inhibitors for more than 4.4 years increased the risk of developing dementia by 33%.
