The relationship between diabetes and loose teeth: What patients need to know and how to address it

TIMESINDONESIA, JAKARTA – Internal medicine specialist, DR Dr Soebagijo Adi Soelistijo, SpPD-KEMD, FINASIM, reminded that loose teeth can be a sign of diabetes, a condition that the patient may not be aware of.

In an online health event on Monday, Dr. Soebagijo explained, “In patients with high blood sugar levels, changes occur in the gums such as lifting and swelling, which ultimately causes the teeth to become loose.”

According to Dr. Soebagijo, a mistake that many people often make when facing this condition is to immediately ask the dentist to remove loose teeth, without realizing that this may be a symptom of diabetes.

“Ironically, when loose teeth due to diabetes are removed, it only relieves the symptoms temporarily. High blood sugar levels are the main cause, and need to be addressed to improve the condition of the gums and prevent loose teeth,” he added.

Dr. Soebagijo emphasized that if blood sugar levels can be controlled properly, the composition of the gums will improve, and diabetes patients’ teeth will not experience loose problems.

Referring to information from the Very Well Health page, diabetes can increase the risk of developing various oral problems. High levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood can cause an increase in sugar in saliva. Bacteria in dental plaque use these sugars, causing tooth decay, cavity formation, tooth loss, and increasing the risk of periodontitis (gum disease).

In addition, diabetes also weakens the immune system, making it difficult to cure infections and treat oral problems. This increases the risk of periodontitis and affects the healing process.

Additionally, less saliva production can be a side effect of certain diabetes medications. A lack of saliva can reduce the ability to clean food particles and prevent bacteria from forming plaque, thereby increasing the risk of tooth decay, cavity formation, and tooth loss.

Dr. Soebagijo closed by reminding that controlling diabetes is an important step in protecting healthy teeth and gums. This not only helps patients manage their diabetes, but also maintains overall oral health.
