Möbel Pfister moves to Freistrasse

Furniture instead of clothing: The fashion chain Esprit has been bankrupt since March. This week, however, it was announced who will take over the Esprit stores on Freistrasse: From November, Möbel Pfister will move in and will mainly sell bedding there. It is the first time in 12 years that there will be a Möbel Pfister in Basel.

Murder case in an apartment building in Breiti

On Thursday afternoon, the Basel-Stadt cantonal police carried out a large-scale search near Breiti. The reason for this was a fatal crime. On Thursday evening, the public prosecutor’s office announced that a woman had been found dead in the stairwell of an apartment building on Naseweg in the Breiti district. The police were initially unable to identify the victim, but on Friday morning the public prosecutor’s office announced that the deceased person was a 75-year-old local resident. On Friday, the public prosecutor’s office ordered a public manhunt for the perpetrator. He is a 32-year-old man who had already murdered two women in the district 10 years ago. At the time of going to press, the perpetrator had not yet been caught.

Anti-discrimination guide and 100 days in office of Mustafa Atici

Following increasing reports of discrimination in schools, the Department of Education has launched an anti-discrimination guide to mark the start of the school year. The 20-page brochure highlights various types of discrimination and explains the consequences for those affected. It also describes how to report a case of discrimination. The brochure was presented on Thursday as part of the media conference “Mustafa Atici: 100 days in office”.

Mustafa Atici, the SP’s education director, has been in office since May. At the press conference, he stressed that his predecessor, the current government president Conradin Cramer, had handed over the department well. Atici reported that he had studied many files in recent weeks to get an overview and tackle the urgent tasks. At the same time, being present at schools is important to him, which is why he was recently seen playing football at the St. Alban school during the lunch break. Equal opportunities are a very important issue for Atici. He believes that action must be taken before school even starts. For example, German language support for children without a good knowledge of German has been expanded. This means that children without sufficient German language skills now take part in a German language support course for three half days instead of the previous two before starting kindergarten. This measure is financed by the canton.
