The Amath Dansokho regional hospital center in Kédougou (south-east) produces, per month, approximately 6 to 7 tons of waste similar to household waste, APS learned from the head of the quality, hygiene, safety and environment (QHSE) department, ape Masser Diallo.
“Just for the quantity of waste that we produce at the Amath Dansokho regional hospital and at the solid waste management coordination unit (UCG), we have, for example, each month, around 6 to 7 tonnes of waste similar to household waste,” he said in an interview with APS.
The health, safety and environmental quality department also handles infectious risk waste from healthcare activities at the hospital level.
“Every month we also process 5 to 6 tonnes of infectious risk healthcare waste at the hospital level to avoid exposing the population. (…) and around 40 safety boxes are processed by our department,” he noted, citing needles and syringes.
Pape Massaer Diallo reported that his department carries out an evaluation of quality and safety criteria every day.
“And in these criteria, there is the safety of care and the safety of the building, that is to say of fire in general which means that we train the hospital staff on the use of fire extinguishers with the support of the firefighters especially in the context of first aid”, said Mr. Diallo.
He also discussed the management of biomedical waste, specifying that this concerns the remains of medicines and care as well as chemical and biological waste. “A part [de ces déchets] will be treated in hospital and what is called high-risk infectious waste,” he noted.
He announced that the Amath Dansokho regional hospital will soon benefit from an incinerator for the management of waste.
