The refugee situation is discussed in the council and it becomes clear that it is no longer an ideal world in Hönnestadt either. A refugee threatens and insults employees in the citizens’ office.
Balve – Nerves are on edge in the town hall: Since 2015, efforts have been made here to accommodate the constantly growing number of refugees. Refugees can contact employees at the citizens’ office with their concerns. “But such behavior is not acceptable – our people were insulted and threatened,” said Mayor Hubertus Mühling (CDU) indignantly at the council meeting on Wednesday evening.
Aggressive demeanor
The current refugee situation in the city was discussed in the council. It became clear that even in Hönnestadt it is no longer an ideal world. When asked by the editorial team, Michael Bathe, the mayor’s general representative, reported on the background to the verbal attack: “An unrecognized refugee with toleration status acted very aggressively this week to push through his concerns.” The money he was entitled to was not enough for him asked for more. “The man was so aggressive and threatening towards our employees that we banned him from the house until April.”
440 refugees live in the city area
The man did not become violent and the police were not involved. But Bathe also emphasized: “Among the approximately 440 refugees currently living in the city, this is one who does not adhere to the rules of coexistence. Collaboration with the others runs smoothly.”
Housing market swept empty
There are still further refugee allocations by the Arnsberg district government. It is important to create accommodation for all of these people – recognized refugees are entitled to an apartment. But these are no longer available, the housing market in Balve has been swept empty, says Bathe. Accordingly, the recognized refugees are currently staying longer in the city’s accommodations, thus taking up places for newcomers.
Renovate old school
The city wants to counteract this by converting the old school in Volkringhausen. A former classroom is to be converted into living space, as is the former fire department group room. An apartment on the top floor is divided into two apartments.
If possible, do not use gyms
Mayor Mühling said in the council: “We are trying to create accommodation options without having to occupy gyms.” This was the case in the Murmke gym during the height of the first wave of refugees from September 2015 to July 2016. “But the Volkringhausen school is still only a temporary solution. The fact remains: it will be demolished when the fire station in Sanssouci is completed in 2024.”
Purchased an apartment building and sanitary container
The council members approved this project, which also includes purchasing two sanitary containers for a total of 39,800 euros. In addition, the city is buying an apartment building in Langenholthausen for 160,000 euros to accommodate refugees there. The decision was made in the non-public part of the council meeting.
Space for 15 more refugees
Michael Bathe: “After the necessary renovation work, 15 recognized refugees will find their place here, which we will then no longer have in the transitional homes. You have to pay rent to the city of Balve.”
