The German car manufacturer BMW has just introduced two modernized models – a mid-life refresh, or feisliftu has experienced the current generation X5 and also the X6 crossover. If the changes in the exterior design of the cars are relatively minor, the larger changes have affected the salons of both models, as well as the technological side.
Visually, both BMW crossovers have received a slightly redesigned front radiator grill that fits into the new front bumper. For an additional fee, the X5 radiator grille can be illuminated. Changes have also affected the design of the LED daytime running lights, but in general the visual differences on the outside are relatively small.
The main changes in the cabin are related to the car’s digital screen – now the X5 and X6 are equipped with a curved digital panel that shows two separate screens – the driver has a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel in front of him, and a 14.9-inch multimedia screen next to it. These systems are powered by the latest version of the iDrive 8 system. For an additional fee, you can buy a head-up display with augmented reality functionality, a panoramic sunroof with LED lighting, as well as a Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
Technically, both models have received improved power units, which BMW promises will provide better fuel economy. The range of engines is complemented by an automatic 8-speed gearbox and all versions have the xDrive all-wheel drive system. For everything in a row – the simplest and cheapest X5 xDrive40i and X6 xDrive40i have received an improved 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, which is complemented by a 48V hybrid system, the electric motor of which develops 12 horsepower and 199Nm of torque. The total output of the system is now 375 horsepower and 519Nm. Previously it was 335 HP and 450 Nm. BMW calculations show that you can run up to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds.
The X5 plug-in hybrid will continue to be available, now called the X5 xDrive 50e – it still uses the 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, complemented by a 194-horsepower and improved electric motor. The total output of the system is now 483 horsepower (700Nm). This model is equipped with a 25.7kWh battery, which allows you to drive more than 60 kilometers in real life with a full battery in electric mode only, and 100 kilometers were also achieved in the WLTP test.
Finally, the X5 and X6 M60i xDrive models are also available – they still use the twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine, but this engine is also complemented by a 48V hybrid system. The total power of the system in this version is 523 horsepower (750Nm).
