The Refereeing Controversies: Napoli in Crisis and Fabio Caressa’s Strong Words

Fabio Caressa, a well-known journalist, spoke very directly about the refereeing controversies of recent days.

Il Napoli finds itself in a very complicated ranking situation. The Azzurri are in sixth position on equal points with Fiorentina. In this round, in addition to being behind Roma, the Azzurri were also overtaken by Thiago Motta’s Bologna.

The third consecutive defeat between Serie A and the Champions League came against Juventus. This hasn’t happened since the 2015-2016 season, the year of Maurizio Sarri’s debut on the Napoli bench.

The performances against Juventus and Real Madrid were not negative, while against Inter there were several refereeing episodes that left traces of controversy and which penalized the Azzurri.

Caressa against the refereeing class: Napoli-Inter has something to do with it

The controversies regarding Napoli-Inter started already after the match with Walter Mazzarri who did not appear at the microphones of Dazn, first, and at the press conference, afterwards, to avoid disqualifications. Sports director Mauro Meluso intervened in his place and showed his disappointment at Davide Massa’s refereeing choices.

The controversies continued for days and Fabio Caressa, a well-known journalist, shows no sign of appeasing them. During “Goal scorer” broadcast on air SkySports, Caressa relaunched with an attack on the entire referee class. Obviously, Massa ended up in the crosshairs of controversy due to Lautaro Martinez’s foul on Lobotka which was not whistled during Napoli-Inter.

Below are his words:

If I were a Napoli fan, seeing today’s episode of Frosinone-Turin I would go crazy! Massimi didn’t understand anything. But be patient! There is a possible penalty foul, do they send it to VAR to look at it and show him a foul in midfield? Then we discuss whether it was a foul or not. It’s the principle, not the phallus. Why was today’s one in Frosinone shown to VAR and Martinez’s one on Lobotka last Sunday against Inter was not? What is the difference? What did he not see there and here he saw? So is it better if she doesn’t see? So let’s remove VAR, as the referees want! Because today in Parma referee Massa, the same as Napoli-Inter, let the goal of Parma’s 2-3 draw against Palermo go for clear offside. And Massa isn’t sent to see it! The player was in the way! At least he has to go and see it at VAR! We have a huge problem if the weight of the varist and the referee affects it! And we make the votes of referees and VAR public. It’s a system that doesn’t work! Are referees afraid that their figure will be diminished by VAR? Progress in any field limits the worker. It’s a big productivity problem these years! It’s not our problem! Now it’s going haphazardly. I watch a match and wonder: will VAR intervene? And I answer: Dunno? But can it be like this? After 32 years does it have to be like this? I don’t know! Tonight the debate at the Club will be hot! Bombs huh? I’m a little nervous about the subject. We’ll scalp the referees tonight!”
