The Redemption of CD Projekt RED: From Hated to Respected – The Cyberpunk 2077 Story

CD Projekt RED has gone through a difficult period in recent years, to which marketing director Michał Platkow-Gilewski is now returning. After release Cyberpunk 2077 the famous studio, considered by many to be one of the best in the world, became hated. According to the head of communication with the players, no one expected this, they were surprised by the whole situation and a fairy tale turned into a nightmare. Fortunately, they were able to pick themselves up, bite the bullet, and work hard to make Cyberpunk 2077 the game everyone wanted.

It was important for the marketing boss to win back the players’ trust. That’s why the management of the Polish studio promised the fans to fix the title. IN conversation Platkow-Gilewski admits that no one expected this.

“Everything was great before the release of Cyberpunk 2077. The best time of my life but it really was too good to be true. The game was shaping up to be fantastic and we were all super excited, but there’s no doubt that the hype came with a lot of pressure. Then came the launch and the fairy tale turned into a nightmare.” says CD Projekt RED’s VP of Communications.

“We knew we would have to work hard to get back to glory. It was a difficult period: we had to change the pipeline management, we started thinking about changing the graphics engine, we decided how we will work in the future and how to structure everything. There have been a lot of internal changes,” reveals that personally, he did not expect such a mess.

“In fact, I think Cyberpunk was much better on release day than it was received, and even the early reviews were positive. Then it became cool to not like the game. We went from hero to zero very quickly. It was a difficult moment. We didn’t know what was going on. We knew the game was great, yes we could make it better, yes we needed to take our time and redo some things. It took us a long time, but I don’t think it ever broke us. We were always like, ‘Let’s do it!'” concludes Platkow-Gilewski’s conversation.

They want to close the path of redemption by releasing the first and at the same time the last story expansion. Phantom Liberty for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S version of Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on 9/26/2023.

The magazine shows that they are on the right track Forbes. Ten estimates the value of CD Projekt RED at $3.5 billion. The creators of The Witcher and Cyberpunk are the largest European video game company. They thus surpassed the French Ubisoft, which is worth 3 billion dollars. According to Forbes, a low valuation could make Ubisoft a prime target for the next big acquisition, whether by Microsoft, Sony or another tech giant.

For comparison: Sony bought Bungie with Destiny for $3.6 billion. At the same time, Ubisoft owns well-known series such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, The Division, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon, as well as preparing Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.

Previously, Ubisoft was described as one of the largest video game companies in the world. Today it is still big, with many studios around the world, but its fame and therefore its value is not what it once was.

Ubisoft’s poor results are evidenced by the value of Activision Blizzard, which Microsoft wants to buy for $68.7 billion, while ZeniMax with Bethesda was bought by the Xbox owner for $7.5 billion, which should have been below the price. Japan’s Capcom is worth 8 billion, Japan’s Square Enix has 5.5 billion, and the American Take-Two Interactive with Rockstar Games (GTA) then 25 billion dollars.
