A few years ago, Andrew Benintendi was a top prospect for the Boston Red Sox. He was an integral part of a young core also made up of Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers, who were seen as the club’s future.
That said, like Betts and Bogaerts, Benintendi is no longer in Boston. The outfielder was traded to the Royals a few years ago before moving to the Yankees at the latest trade deadline. So, he signed a deal with the White Sox to spend the next five years with Chicago.
Then find the Sox, but it changed color.
However, Benintendi could be wearing red stockings again, according to Chris Cotillo, as the Red Sox have shown interest in bringing the outfielder back to town this winter.
After all, it didn’t lead to much: the Red Sox weren’t ready to meet Benintendi’s salary demands, who signed a $75 million deal over five years.
Instead, we gave Masataka Yoshida a five-year contract for the tidy sum of $90 million (and a fee of just over $15 million for getting him out of Japan).
So we feel that the Red Sox had a nose in a lot of races in the range market, but for one reason or another it just didn’t work out. We also wanted to bring back Bogaerts and JD Martinez but both are now in the West side of the National.
Clearly, the old faces of the organization weren’t particularly interested in returning to the city.
Overall, it will be interesting to see what the Red Sox are like next season, but clearly the team is in every game and we seem to want to improve. It remains to be seen whether this will translate into success on the pitch.
