The Red Cross is training hundreds of people to provide additional help to traumatized victims of the earthquake in Turkey. The aid organization has noticed that many people there have been suffering from psychological problems since the disaster.
As a result of the emotional problems, children wet the bed more often. Domestic violence has also increased “now that people live close together, often in one small room with a kitchenette, sofa and bunk bed,” says an employee of the Turkish Red Crescent. This is the organization that provides assistance on behalf of the Red Cross.
According to the Red Cross, the number of suicides in the region has also increased in recent months.
Southeastern Turkey and northern Syria were hit by a major earthquake and major aftershocks in early February.
More than 55,000 people were killed in the earthquakes. According to the Turkish government, more than 80,000 buildings in the country have collapsed or been seriously damaged.

Families live in 100,000 container homes
According to the Red Cross, there are now 100,000 container homes in three southern Turkish provinces. Families who lost their homes nine months ago live there. Schools, learning centers, small shopping centers and playgrounds have also been set up in the area.
Some of the temporary homes are not yet ready for winter. That is why the Red Cross is helping 40,000 households with heating, blankets and insulation of the container homes.
The emergency workers also help to anchor the containers firmly in the ground, so that they can withstand strong winds. They also place tent tarpaulins over the roofs to prevent leakage due to rain or snow.
