The Red Cross has opened giro number 5125 for food aid in the Netherlands. The organization notices that the demand for food aid is increasing and wants twice as many people to receive this aid. “From 20,000 people reached in 2022 to a minimum of 40,000 in 2023.”
The organization helps people by, among other things, handing out shopping cards. With such a card you can buy groceries for 17.50 euros. In 2022, the Red Cross distributed more than 215,000 of these cards.
“It is a worrying development that more and more people in the Netherlands do not have enough money to buy enough healthy and varied food,” says Heleen van den Berg, acting director of National Aid and Association Management at the Red Cross. “They eat too little or skip meals.”
The Red Cross believes that the number of people needing food aid will continue to increase in the near future.
