The rector of the University of La Rioja, Juan Carlos Ayala, is holding a meeting this Wednesday, January 25, with Javier García Martínez, professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Alicante and president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). .

The Governing Council of the University of La Rioja (UR) approved on December 22, 2022 the granting of the Doctorate ‘Honoris Causa’ to the scientist from La Rioja, at the proposal of the Department of Chemistry and after passing through the Doctoral Commission.

Javier García Martínez (Villamediana -La Rioja-, 1973) is a professor of Inorganic Chemistry, director of the Molecular Nanotechnology Laboratory at the University of Alicante, from where he regularly collaborates with the University of La Rioja. On June 9, the Government of La Rioja distinguished him as a Riojano de Honor.

He is a regular collaborator of the University of La Rioja, specifically, of the “Organometallic Molecular Materials” Research Group (MATMO) of the Department of Chemistry, with which he has developed various scientific projects related to nanotechnology and its application in photocatalysis, obtaining clean energy, light emitting diodes or biomedical applications that have given rise to 10 joint articles in international journals and a patent.

He is president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the international body that governs all aspects related to chemistry, its representation, the approval of standards and develops more than a hundred international scientific projects. This is the first time that a Spaniard presides over the largest Scientific Union in the world in its more than 100-year history.
