It was one of the soap operas of the summer in Boston, here it is! Jaylen Brown just signed the biggest contract in NBA history, with $304 million over five years. Having become eligible at the end of the season, he pockets the jackpot!
wow! It’s official, Jaylen Brown will become the highest paid player in the NBA – as of this writing – on July 1, 2024. The Celtics star has signed a five-year, $304 million deal with Boston, i.e. the maximum possible, defined by the supermax contract term. To be eligible for such an offer, Brown had to meet a multitude of criteria, namely being named to an All-NBA team, having seven years in the NBA behind him… and having remained on the same team for those seven seasons.
Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics have agreed on a five-year supermax extension worth up to $304 million, the richest contract in NBA history, his agent Jason Glushon of @GlushonSM tells ESPN. pic.twitter.com/oYmD6XDy9D

Spoiler: all the boxes are checked, and it is therefore a record amount that the player will receive. An amount which is a guarantee of Boston’s extreme confidence in him, since we are talking about progressive annual salaries with a last year… approaching 70 million! Moreover, the project is obviously to go through with this deal with the Celtics, since the contract includes – according to Marc J. Spears – a trade kicker, a clause that ensures the player to receive a certain percentage of his contract if he is transferred during it. With 304 million, imagine the hole in the cash flow if this percentage reaches even 10%.
Here is the breakdown on the Jaylen Brown super max extension in Boston:
2024-2025 $52,368,085
2025-2026 $56,557,532
2026-2027 $60,746,979
2027-2028 $64,936,425
2028-2029 $69,125,872
Total $303,734,893

Jaylen Brown therefore exceeds Nikola Jokic, so far holder of the best NBA contract in history with 272 million over five years. If all this seems disproportionate, make no mistake about it: it is above all tactical. The next deal for NBA TV rights will take place in 2025, and should explode the current amount. Signing such a contract today therefore ensures that the Celtics will not have to pay much more in a few years. The next case to deal with? That of Jayson Tatum, who will also be eligible for a similar contract… next summer.
