the recipe and story behind the Twitter hype – SWR3

While SWR3Land was sitting on the grill last Sunday, the trendy US kitchen is seething at the other end of the North Atlantic: crispy popcorn salad with sugar peas is taking over the internet. What’s behind this controversial social media recipe?

We are talking about Molly Yehs Koch-Video, a food blogger for the US broadcaster Food Network. This video was shared on Twitter on Sunday with the flattering words “What the hell is this?” And received around three million views. The bizarre “salad” consists of popcorn, powdered cheese, carrots, snow peas, vinegar, onions and celery. The whole thing is crowned with a generous layer of rich mayo sauce. Molly Yeh says “The texture of the salad is so strangely delicious, I just can’t get enough of it!”

The controversial recipe was flooded with memes and funny comments on Twitter. For example, the salad was known as “wet mayo popcorn”. One user even wrote:

If you’ve looked at the popcorn salad and thought, ‘Hmm, that looks good,’ then I never want to hear from you again that you’re worried about what’s in the Covid vaccine.

But there were also supporters on the Internet: “Popcorn salad is so delicious. I do mine a little differently. I know it sounds weird, but it’s so tasty. You only have to try it once. ”In fact, some believe that it is an innocent variation on“ coleslaw ”(coleslaw in German), a typical American side dish made from finely grated cabbage and mayonnaise.
