The recession hits the mobile phone market in Egypt and the dollar is the watchword

A recent report revealed a decline in mobile phone sales in Egypt during the month of August, to record about 674 thousand units, compared to about 1.427 million units in the same period last year, a decline of 52.7%.

Subsequent increases in Exchange rates of the dollar against the Egyptian poundwith significant increases in the prices of mobile phones, which some sources estimate at “Al Arabiya.net”, of over 100% in some types of brands.

Due to the dollar shortage crisis in Egypt, the list of companies controlling market shares in the Egyptian market has changed. While ‘Samsung’ topped the list, its runner-up ‘Huawei’ dropped out of the list of competing companies after grabbing a large share of the Egyptian market.

According to data released by the Marketing Research Corporation “GfK”, the Korean brand “Samsung” outperformed the sales of phones after managing to increase its market share to 38.8% during the month of August, compared to a share of market by 32.7% during the same period last year.

Despite the decline in market share, Chinese “OPPO” phones held the second position with a market share of 16.8%, compared to 24.5% in the same period last year.

And in third place are Chinese “Redmi” phones, whose market share was around 16.7% in August, compared to around 13.9% in the same period last year.

Realme phones ranked fourth with 13.2% market share, up from about 8.8% in the same period last year. While “Infinix” phones occupied the fifth position, with a market share of 4.1%, compared to a 7.9% share in the same period last year.

The American brand “Apple” ranked sixth with a market share of 3.1%, compared to 1.8% in the same period last year. While the remaining market shares, equal to approximately 7.3%, were distributed to other commercial brands offered in the local market in the same month.

In a recent report, the Central Agency of Public Mobilization and Statistics in Egypt revealed a drop in Egyptian imports of mobile phones during the first 8 months of this year, as the value of Egyptian imports recorded $337 million, compared to about $1.2 billion for the year-to-date 2021 comparison period. a decline of about 72%.

The Statistics Authority said the import bill for mobile devices fell 90.1 percent during the second quarter of 2022, to reach $40.145 million from $47.155 million during the second quarter of 2021, and a decline of approximately 41.4% during the first quarter to record $273.656 million compared to $273.656 million $467.284 million during the same quarter of 2021.
