The recent poll reflects a broader trend –

A recent poll from Florida gives the US presidential candidates a reason to smile and grimace.

Both Democrats and Republicans have managed to increase their support in certain voter groups. In others, support has decreased.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump leads Democrat Kamala Harris in Florida by four percentage points.

In a recent opinion poll by The Marist Poll, Trump gets 51 percent and Harris 47 percent of the total support.

Harris beats Biden

Harris holds a significant lead among independent voters. 55 percent of them support the Democratic candidate, while 41 percent support Trump.

Harris’ lead of 14 percentage points is larger than the one that incumbent President Joe Biden managed to amass in 2020, notes The Hill, which reports on politics. Biden won the independent vote by 11 percentage points.

Florida used to be considered a Libra state, but today it is considered to lean Republican.

The last time the Democratic presidential candidate won in the state was in 2012. Barack Obama won Florida’s votes at that time by an extremely tight margin of 0.88 percentage points.

These are the sounds Harris would like

Trump is picking up votes in the polls that Harris would no doubt want for himself.

Trump gets 58 percent of the support of Latino voters, while Harris gets 40 percent. Harris is running a broad campaign to garner the Latino vote, especially in the Welcoming states.

In a recent survey, Trump’s Latino support is 12 percentage points higher than in the 2020 election.

A broader trend is visible

According to The Hill, the poll reflects a trend seen in some recent national polls.

The results suggest that Latino voters and black voters are moving away from Democrats, it said. On the other hand, the Democrats show a slight increase in the support of white voters.

Harris has a solid lead among black voters. He gets 76 percent of the support, Trump only 24 percent.

However, Harris’s support is dropping rapidly after Biden’s election results. Biden managed to collect 89 percent of the support of black voters in Florida in 2020.

Trump leads Harris among white voters. He collects 53 percent of the votes, Harris 45 percent. However, Trump’s approval rating has dropped from the previous election, where he garnered 62 percent of the white vote.

Before the hurricane

The Marist Poll’s recent survey was conducted on 3-7 October, i.e. before Hurricane Milton hit Florida. If Milton affects the support of the candidates, it will only be seen in opinion polls published later.

1,257 people answered the survey. Its margin of error is 3.6 percentage points.
