Injuries to people with diabetes very difficult to cure. The wound will last a long time or even become ulcers.
In addition, despite having a high appetite, people with diabetes also often experience diabetes weight loss which is quite drastic.
What exactly makes diabetics experience this?
The doctor who is also the Chair of the Indonesian Peripheral Neurophysiology and Nerve Study Group, Manfaluthy Hakim said, as a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels above normal values, diabetes can indeed cause the body to become emaciated and make wound healing difficult.
Diabetics are more likely to feel hungry, but their bodies are not fat at all. This happens because there is damage to blood vessels due to increased blood sugar levels in the body.
Manfaluthy explained, this constant hunger is related to the problem of the lack of insulin produced by the body to form energy. When the body cannot get enough energy from sugar, the body’s cells respond by signaling there is no energy.
This then makes the body rush to process other substances in the body to be converted into energy, such as fat and protein. If it lasts long enough, people with diabetes can look thin and experience weight loss.
If this happens continuously, there will be damage to blood vessels, one of which is in the legs.
When blood vessels are damaged, nutrients will be difficult to flow to the feet and other wounds in the body will be difficult to heal.
“As a result, the patient will lose feeling in the leg. So when he is seriously injured he does not feel it, and he realizes that when the wound is large, it expands and becomes ulcers,” he said.
This wound will also be difficult to heal because the blocked blood flow was difficult to carry nutrients that are useful for regenerating blood and skin. As a result, the wound will continue to grow until it is difficult to heal.
“So it’s not because the meat is sweet so that germs like it, no. It’s because of blockage of blood vessels. Likewise, the reason why diabetics can lose weight drastically, because there are no nutrients produced by the body,” he said.
