The reason Windows 7 and 8 were retired when they still had millions of users

Jakarta, CNNI Indonesia

Windows 7 and 8.1 will not receive security updates and technical support starting January 10th. Because Microsoft ‘bury’ two operating systems still used by millions of people?

Especially for Windows 7, the PC operating system has stopped security update as of January 14, 2020. However, Microsoft still provides a 3-year extension for the Professional, Enterprise, and Professional for Embedded Systems editions of Windows 7.

Each is given until January 12, 2021, January 11, 2022 and January 10, 2023.

“Microsoft committed to providing 10 years of product support for Windows 7 when it was released on October 22, 2009. This 10-year period has ended,” the company wrote on its website. Support.

“And Microsoft has discontinued support for Windows 7 so that we can focus our investment on supporting new technologies and experiences. End of support for Windows 7 is January 14, 2020,” Microsoft wrote on the support page.

Quoted from The limitWindows 7 is expected to have around 100 million users as of 2021.

A Lansweeper survey of 27 million Windows devices conducted in October also found that more PCs were running Windows XP, 7 or 8 than Windows 11.

Meanwhile, Windows 8.1 was completely discontinued on January 10th. Previously, its previous series, Windows 8, was no longer supported as of January 12, 2016.

With this loss of support, Microsoft 365 Apps will no longer run on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems.

Microsoft also recommends users to switch to the latest Windows operating system immediately to avoid performance issues.

Microsoft itself releases a new operating system every few years. Most recently, Microsoft launched Windows 11 on October 5, 2021.

The presence of the latest operating system certainly makes the old operating system no longer an option, because it is less relevant to the user’s needs. Microsoft also recommends users to upgrade to the latest Windows 10 or Windows 11 operating system immediately.

On their support page, Microsoft mentions that Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 users can switch to Windows 10 if their devices are not compatible with Windows 11. However, it should be noted that Windows 10 will end support on October 14, 2025.
