Jakarta – The reason why King Abrahah attacked the Kaaba is explained in the book The Art of Leadership in the Way of the Prophet Becomes a True Leader According to the Sunnah by Muhammad Wildan Aulia DU It all started before the arrival of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula. This period is referred to as pre-Islamic in the book.
The Arabian Peninsula region in pre-Islamic times was geographically and socio-culturally divided into two regions, namely the southern and northern parts.
The southern region has very fertile natural conditions and many springs, causing the civilization of its people to become very advanced. This is proven by the many large kingdoms there.
On the other hand, in the northern region, namely Medina and Makkah, it is a barren and dry area. Rain rarely falls in this region so civilization is not as advanced as the southern region. The only symbol of the greatness of the Arab community in the northern region is the Kaaba.
In the book Muhammad the Prophet for All written by Maulana Wahiduddin Khan, it is stated that the Kaaba is the center of worship for the entire Arabian Peninsula.
All ethnic groups erected their idols there. They consider the Kaaba to be a holy place so they flock there to worship.
With the arrival of groups worshiping idols at the Kaaba, Mecca always received great profits from the pilgrims.
This is what made Abraha want to attract these financial resources to his own area, namely Yamen which is located southeast of Makkah City.
He used various methods to achieve his goal. He killed the previous Governor of Yamen and took over his power. Then he forced the King of Abyssinia to recognize his authority in that area.
In the city of San’a, King Abrahah built a large church and launched propaganda so that the residents would move to visit his church instead of the Kaaba.
The aim was none other than to be able to gain trade profits from the pilgrims who came from Mecca from San’a.
All the efforts made by King Abraha were not successful. Finally he decided to destroy the Kaaba so that the pilgrims would move to the church he had built.
In the year of the Prophet Muhammad SAW’s birth, which is in 570 AD, King Abrahah decided to gather his army together with his elephants. He then came to the Kaaba and tried to destroy it.
Abdurrahman bin Abdul Karim in his book entitled The Complete History of the Prophet Muhammad SAW: From Before the Time of Prophethood to After, explains that the efforts made by King Abrahah were not successful.
In the middle of his journey to destroy the Kaaba, Allah SWT sent the bird Ababil to destroy the elephant army.
The birds of Ababil came with stones from the fire and attacked the army from above until they all perished.
This story is immortalized by Allah SWT in Al-Qur’an surah Al-Fil verses 1-5 which reads,
Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with the companion of the elephant? (1)
Meaning: Don’t you (Prophet Muhammad) notice how your Lord has acted against the army of elephants?
Did He not cause their scheming to lead you astray? (2)
Meaning: Has He not made their deception useless?
And He sent upon them flocks of birds (3)
Meaning: He sent them birds in droves
You throw stones of clay at them (4)
Meaning: who threw stones at them made of burnt clay,
So He made them like edible chaff. (5)
Meaning: so He made them like leaves that are eaten (caterpillars).
That is the reason why King Abrahah attacked the Kaaba which was none other than because he wanted to take advantage for his power.
