Werner, who will soon be close to Chelsea, spoke about his decision not to strengthen RB Leipzig in the continued UCL 2019/20 season.
Chelsea’s Timo Werner has revealed his decision to leave the RB Leipzig campaign in the Champions League, with him currently preparing to officially head to Stamford Bridge.
The German striker will begin his official contract with The Blues on July 1 after the London club made it up to £ 47.5 million ($ 59 million) earlier this month.
However, Werner’s quick decision to join Chelsea after the agreed transfer amount made the attacker miss the rest of the Leipzig season in the Champions League.
The Bundesliga club advanced to the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, with them securing a 4-0 aggregate against Tottenham Hotspur.
Werner has contributed four goals in eight appearances in European elite competition, including the winning goal in leg first round of the last 16 against Spurs in London.
“Of course it hurts me that I cannot help [RB Leipzig] to play in the Champions League. “But I am a Chelsea FC player from July 1 and I have been paid by Chelsea since then,” Werner told Sports buzzer.
“It is clear that all parties – Chelsea, RB and my team – must and must resolve this. Of course I try to avoid the Champions League problem as much as possible because it is clear I have to hurt one side. That’s why my agent finally reached an agreement with the club.”
Werner helped Leipzig finish third in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season – contributing 28 goals in 34 appearances – before he packed his bag to move to London.

The 24-year-old became the all-time top scorer in Leipzig in his last match for the club on Saturday, with brace what he scored against Augsburg put him on 95 goals, two more than the previous record holder Daniel Frahn.
Although unable to participate in Leipzig’s Champions League trip again, Werner said he would still support his former team and hope to attend their quarter-finals if the situation allows.
“I am forever connected to Leipzig and RB, will sit in front of the TV during the quarter-finals and keep praying – maybe I can even be at the location of the match in Lisbon,” Werner said.
