The reason the US insists on defending Ukraine if it is attacked by Russia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

President Joe Biden repeatedly confirms commitment United States of America defend Ukraine especially when facing the threat of a Russian attack.

Biden reiterated the commitment of the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to Ukraine, even though Russia said it had withdrawn troops near the former Soviet Union on Tuesday.

He said whatever happens, the US and NATO will step up every inch to defend Ukraine.

“The United States will defend every inch of NATO territory to the fullest strength at its disposal. An attack on a single NATO country is an attack on all of us,” Biden said in a press statement at the White House, quoted by Reuters. CNNTuesday (15/2).

Biden then said, “The US commitment to Article 5 (of the NATO agreement) is sacred.”

Article 5 of the NATO agreement is one of the main reasons the US will defend Ukraine if it is invaded by Russia.

In short, Article 5 in the NATO agreement contains a pledge of allegiance to each member state that will help other members if attacked by the enemy.

The article contains the principle of a collective agreement, which ensures that the resources of all NATO members can be used and deployed to protect any member state that is under threat from being attacked by the enemy.

In addition, because the US is the largest country with the strongest military among other NATO members, every country in the alliance is effectively under the protection of Uncle Sam’s Country.

“The parties agree that an armed attack against one or more in Europe and North America shall be considered an attack against all members,” reads article 5.

If such an attack occurs, each of them, in individual or collective self-defense, will assist the other members who are attacked immediately, individually or together with the other members. Members have the right to take any action they deem necessary, including the use of armed forces to maintain the security of the North Atlantic region.”

This is in accordance with the exercise of individual or collective defense rights recognized by article 51 of the United Nations (UN) Charter.

“Any such armed attack and all actions taken as a result must be immediately reported to the Security Council. Such actions will be stopped when the Security Council has taken the necessary actions to restore and maintain international peace and security,” continued article 5 of NATO.

This article is very crucial and has an impact on small countries that are powerless without the support of allies. For example, Iceland, a country that does not have a permanent army.
