The reason the Galaxy Z Fold2 doesn’t waste battery even though it has a 120 Hz screen

Samsung officially launched Galaxy Z Fold2 with a number of updates compared to its predecessor released last year, the Galaxy Fold.

One of the improvements is in the power sector, where the foldable smartphone battery made by the South Korean company has a capacity of 4,500 mAh, instead of 4,235 mAh as in the first generation.

This slightly larger battery power provides power for a series of new technologies and features, such as an enlarged front screen (cover display) and the main screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate which is arguably more power intensive than conventional screens (60 Hz).

So, what is the battery Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 can last all day to support the user experience?

Taufiq Furqan, as Product Marketing Manager Samsung Electronics Indonesia, said that the battery is not a barrier to the productivity of the foldable smartphone user. This is because the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is equipped with a panel layer that can adjust the refresh rate to the content displayed.

“The screen of the Galaxy Z Fold is coated with a ‘Hybrid Oxide Polysilicon’ (HOP) panel, this allows the screen to work adaptively according to the content being viewed,” said Taufiq in Samsung Virtual Event.

The adaptive point here is that the refresh rate on the main screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 can change automatically and not always at 120 Hz, so it can save screen power.

When viewing static content such as text or images, for example, the refresh rate will only be in the range of 1 – 11 Hz. Then, if you watch moving content, such as movies, the refresh rate will be adjusted from 24 – 120 Hz, depending on the video frame rate (fps).

Meanwhile, when used to play games, the refresh rate can be in the range of 48 – 120 Hz.

“With this variable refresh rate, automatic battery usage is far more optimal,” said Taufiq.

In addition to the refresh rate, the main memory technology or RAM that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 carries is also claimed to save battery power.

“The LPDDR5 RAM technology is also 20 percent lower in usage than the previous RAM technology,” added Taufiq.
