The reason people turned down that movie was because of superstar Mohanlal: CB Malail
There are some films that remain discussed and accepted by the public even years after their release. One of them is Devduthan released in 2000. That film that did not have success in theaters also has many fans in the new generation.
The film’s story, storytelling, music, camera and character work are all praised today. Every song composed by Vidyasagar remains Malayali’s favorite love song.
Now CBI director Malail has openly said he couldn’t make the film the way he wanted. Foods Malail says that even though the film was able to gain acceptance and recognition among Malaysians today, he is still worried that he might not be taken the way he wanted. He was speaking in an interview with Film Companion.

“It’s a big disappointment that I couldn’t make the movie I wanted to do in the case of Devduthan. I never intended Mohanlal for that movie. There was a young college hero in my mind.
The plan was for the romance that happened on campus then and the romance that happened years ago, so that parallel love stories happen. The late Nikhil Maheshwar was trying to communicate a message to his girlfriend who was waiting for him through today’s romantic couples. It was a good format. That’s why I couldn’t come. When Mohanlal arrived, the whole format had to be changed.

The central character was a seven-year-old boy in the story he had in mind while making the first film in 1983. The boy communicated through his dreams. Later, after 17 years of reflection, this turned into a romance on campus.
Only those who know love understand the pain of desire. Nikhil Maheshwar’s soul is creating love between two former friends without even knowing it. Devadoothan’s basic idea was that Nikhil Maheshwar believes he can talk to his girlfriend through the fervor of their love. This changed later. With this idea in mind, there is still the possibility of films in languages other than Malayalam.

So people didn’t like it when a big star turned into a very simple and sophisticated musician. Hearing the name Devduthan, people expected Mohanlal’s next role and super human action.
