A total of 32 character names Betawi immortalized as the names of streets, buildings, and zones in Jakarta. Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan said the naming of this street as a form of respect for the Betawi figures.
“On this quiet afternoon, we can gather together at the Betawi Cultural Village, Setu Babakan, to witness the ceremony to determine the names of Betawi figures whose roles in the past have impacted the life journey of Jakarta and Indonesia,” said Anies, as quoted from site DKI Provincial Government, Wednesday (22/6/2022).
The inauguration of the street names was carried out symbolically in the Betawi Cultural Village Area of Setu Babakan, South Jakarta, Monday (20/6). Anies said the Betawi figures were remembered for providing benefits to the community.
He explained that the Betawi people have become the glue and strengthen the knot of nationality. In addition, according to him, the Betawi people have a warm welcome to the nation’s children from all over Indonesia in Jakarta.
“How big is the contribution of the Betawi people to the strong knot of the Indonesian nationality. Behind the splendor of a city, there is a knot of unity and this knot cannot possibly grow if it is not facilitated by the Betawi people. Therefore, Indonesia has a big debt of gratitude to the Betawi people because in this place The national weaving is knitted by the warmth of the Betawi people who welcome all of us from various parts of Indonesia with equality,” he said.
Anies said the name of the character Betawi It deserves to be remembered because it has contributed in various sectors. He also hopes that the naming of this road will trigger the emergence of a new generation of Betawi figures in the future.
Anies added that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government wants to make roads in Jakarta a ‘civilization museum’ so that people of all generations can reminisce about walking or driving through the road.
“We feel grateful, Jakarta has many figures who will later become a ‘civilization museum’ in the middle of the city. When we pass that road, we will be aware of the name and its contribution, at the same time in Jakarta we want to make improvements to street names that will be arranged as real pointers, ” he said.
The determination of this road, he continued, is also an effort to make the city of Jakarta more informative and a reference. The name change is also said to have been discussed in depth with various parties.
“The change in the name of this road has been discussed with the police, BPN, Dukcapil Service and gradually it can be with a new name. This is part of our effort to be able to jointly make this change not difficult, it makes it easier,” he said.
