Half an hour after the vote in the Turkish parliament, the word “NATO” has been written in nearly 160,000 posts on X, formerly Twitter.
“An important step closer to full membership in NATO,” writes State Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) on Instagram and Facebook just minutes after the Turkish parliament’s vote.
Foreign Minister Tobias Billström (M) comments on the incident on X:
“Sweden will be a reliable, solidary and committed NATO member”.
Even Magdalena Andersson (S) was quick to express herself on X: “Glad that the Turkish parliament has now voted yes to ratify our application”.
Andersson points out that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan needs to sign the ratification.
“Looking forward to both Turkey and Hungary quickly taking the final steps required for Sweden to become members of NATO”.
“Counting on Hungary”
Both Johan Pehrson (L), Muharrem Demirok (C) and Ebba Busch (KD) chime in and welcome Turkey’s announcement on X. Sweden’s former Prime Minister Carl Bildt writes: “It really took time”.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says that he welcomes the fact that the national assembly in Turkey has voted to ratify Sweden’s membership in NATO.
“I also expect Hungary to complete its national ratification as soon as possible. All NATO countries agreed in Vilnius to invite Sweden to our alliance and Sweden has fulfilled its commitments. Sweden’s membership makes NATO stronger and us all safer.”
