The Rare KMZ K1-B ‘Kievlyanin’ Motorcycle: A Symbol of Kyiv Motor Plant’s Legacy from Germany

The rare KMZ K1-B “Kievlanin” motorcycle from 1949 in excellent condition became the subject of special attention. This model became a symbol of the beginning of the Kyiv Motor Plant in 1945, producing them for the first three years using imported components from Germany.

After some time, the production of all necessary parts was established in Kyiv, which made it possible to abandon imports from Germany. The return of this localized version of the K1-B “Kievlyanin” motorcycle to the capital aroused particular interest. It is an almost exact copy of the German Wanderer SP1 motorcycle, equipped with a 98 cc Sachs engine.

Despite its age, which exceeds 70 years, the motorcycle remains fully equipped and is able to start and move. However, due to the design features of its engine, which was developed in the 30s of the 20th century, the use of a specific type of fuel is required. The compression ratio is only 5.9.

The KMZ K1-B “Kievlyanin” motorcycle has dual rear wheel drive. It can be started and used either with pedals, like a bicycle, or with the help of a 98 cc 2.3 hp engine. The maximum speed that “Kievlyanin” can reach is 50 km/h. By modern standards, the K1-B motorcycle would be classified as a moped, but at the time of its release in the 1940s, such a concept did not yet exist.

Kievlyanin’s products were known for their reliability and were distributed throughout the USSR. Even today, motorcycles of this model can be found not only in Kyiv, but also in other parts of the CIS. They were also exported to socialist countries. During the period from 1945 to 1952, about 40 thousand KMZ K1-B motorcycles and its modifications were produced. But later, they were replaced by heavier M-72 boxer motorcycles with a sidecar.
