The historic Dodge Starcraft Motorhome impresses not only with its unique design, but also with its rarity. It was produced in only twelve pieces and only three have survived to this day. One of them can now be yours.
The post-war era in the United States brought new popularity to RV camping. The most famous American manufacturer, Airstream, which was already successful before the Second World War, benefited from the new trend, and other manufacturers also began to appear on the new market. They all wanted to impress adventurous Americans with their idea of what innovative campers should look like and what they should offer.
In the 1960s, Starcraft also became interested in the RV business. It was founded in the same year as the most famous manufacturer of motorcycles, Harley-Davidson, i.e. in 1903, and has developed from the production of metal feeding and feeding containers for farm animals to mobile homes. In 1964, it introduced the first camper trailers and subsequently introduced the quirky Dodge camper.
And it’s rarer today than you might think. It is called the Dodge Starcraft Motorhome and was created in 1970 on the technical foundations of the Dodge car company. It combines a traditional chassis frame with a gasoline 5.2-liter forked eight-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The non-traditional design of the motorhome, reminiscent of a shortened bus, has a fiberglass body and rich equipment, which has undergone visible modernization.
The fully equipped Dodge camper has a sofa that folds out into two beds and a kitchenette with a refrigerator, microwave, sink and running water. At the rear of the living space is a simple bathroom with an integrated toilet and it has a modern air conditioning unit on the roof. The historic “dweller” is even equipped with power steering and brakes, an American 110 V electrical network and a clean water tank with a volume of 113 liters.
At the same time, collectors of American classics have an interesting opportunity to expand their collections. Historical records state that Starcraft only produced twelve such RVs, with only three believed to survive to this day. This particular one in blue colors with stylish graphics will be sold by the Mecum auction house in Dallas in September.
Even experienced sellers of historic and modern cars do not indicate the expected final sale price on official websites. The Dodge Motorhome will be auctioned without reserve, and the success of the sale will depend only on whether only one or more serious bidders appear at the auction and compete for it with their bids.
