PUFA has spread very quickly among Moroccan youth in major cities in recent weeks, prompting civil society activists and medical professionals to sound the alarm about the rapidly addictive drug.
The new drug is called “buffa” or “cocaine of the poor”, due to its cheap price, and it is distinguished from other drugs in that its user quickly falls into the trap of addiction.
The drug has become headlines in Morocco, and human rights organizations warn of its rapid spread, which prompted the authorities to finally act.
And the “Hespress” website reports that during the period from the beginning of January 2020 to the end of May 2023, nearly 200 cases related to the drug “buffa” were registered.
What is PUFA?
Al-Tayeb Hamidi, a doctor and researcher in health policies, says that the drug “PUFA” is what is known in the United States as “crack”, made from cocaine residues, and these residues are mixed with ammonia and other substances, which gives it its “crystalline” form.
According to my acid, the “buffa” step lies in the fact that it is a strong drug and spreads quickly, because its dose is 5 to 6 times cheaper than cocaine, which is why it is called “the cocaine of the poor.”
Acidic said in an interview with Al-Hurra that the addictive power of that drug is very large, and its user needs several doses a day, because “the effect of a single dose is very short.”
He continues: “Therefore, the first reason for the rapid spread of that drug is due to the cheapness of the dose and not to the cheapness of the drug, and the second reason is that it is inhaled through the lungs and then (transferred) to the blood vessels and then to the brain, so after 8 seconds its effect begins.”
How is it used?
My acid says, in his interview with Al-Hurra, that the effect of the PUFA lasts about 15 minutes, and the method of using it is easy, with a plastic bottle, unlike injections, and therefore its addiction is also fast.
Regarding its effect, the specialist doctor says, “PUFA gives strength and agitation to the body, as the pupils of the eyes widen, and the heartbeat increases.” He added: “Activity also increases, and the user feels that he is at the height of his strength and activity, but because the effect is short, the user quickly feels depressed and becomes sad. To start looking for another potion.”
its health risks
Acidic says the drug can lead to heart problems or heart attacks and respiratory illnesses.
As for the social level, it pushes the user to isolate himself from his surroundings and his family, and his main concern becomes obtaining a dose, according to the specialist.
My acid adds that 9 out of 10 drug addicts suffer from malnutrition because they give up eating, ulcers appear in their bodies, and they suffer from tooth and hair loss, not because of the drug directly, but because of the isolation that affects the drug user.
My acid continues that the user may resort to committing crimes in order to obtain the doses, and may even steal his family.
Likewise, the specialist doctor says that the authorities’ abuse of the drug must be strong, as the United States did in the eighties and Europe in the nineties. He added: “The United States launched a major security crackdown on the drug in the eighties of the last century, and applied the most severe penalties to its users, more than cocaine.” (free)
